Holiday Delights of Lanzarote

Tourists will be flocking to the Canary Islands this summer – despite the recent ash cloud problems. As this is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Spain, blessed with wonderful weather and breathtaking beaches. And with no less than seven seperate islands to choose from.

Lanzarote is the third most popular after Tenerife and Gran Canaria and is a lot les crowded and built up than these two islands. Thanks largely to the fact that the local government passed strict planning laws in the 1970´s which prohibit the construction of high rise buildings. As a result the north of the island in particular is very unspoilt. And even the three main tourist resorts are very well contained and unobtrusive.

Despite the fact that it take four hours to reach the island flights to Lanzarote are still quite cheap. As there are plenty of low cost options on the route in the shape of airlines such as easyJet and Ryanair. Which has helped to encourage the development of independent tourism – in tandem with package holidays, which are still very popular, especially amongst British tourists.

Accommodation on the island is fairly even split between hotels and self catering. With Spanish and German guests preferring the former and tourists from the UK and Eire tending to book apartments and villas in Lanzarote direct. Often using the internet to contact property owners on the island.

As you would expect much of the best accommodation is found in the main holiday resorts, although there are still plenty of rural fincas and hotels available for those who want to escape the relative hustle and bustle of the main destinations.

Puerto del Carmen is the number one holiday hot spot on Lanzarote – accounting for the bulk of tourist guests thanks to some fine beaches and excellent nightlife. Most of which can be found along the 6km long Avenida de las Playas which runs from one end of the resort to the other.

As a result villas in Puerto del Carmen are especially popular with tourists looking for a lively holiday that combines lazy days with good nights out. And there are some high quality rental properties located in all parts of the resort.

Because of its great climate Lanzarote welcomes holidaymakers all year round. So the delights of resorts such as Puerto del Carmen can be enjoyed even during December and January.

The Best Vacation Ever

If flying in a Russian Mig or taking off into space sound a little different then your run of the mill vacation, then you would be correct. I’m sure you’ve all read in the news these days, of rich and famous celebrities taking an opportunity to fly into space. Well, as crazy as it may sound, it’s all true, and the good news is you don’t necessarily have to be rich and famous to do it. You could spend time in Russian, learning to fly a combat flight simulator and then if your so inclined, actually take off in a real one. With a little bit of guidance of course.  Now, doesn’t that sound a little more interesting than lying on the beach somewhere.

If leaving the ground sounds a bit too ambitious for you, but some sightseeing might be more up your alley, then why not visit the baikonur cosmodrome and see where space travel history was made.  I think that really sounds like something I could get into.  I remember growing up through the big space race, and would love to learn more about the Russian space program.  Or, if you have other interests in mind, and just want to spend some time sightseeing Moscow then you can do that as well.  It’s a city rich in history and culture that would have much to offer for the first time or repeat visitor.

Travel Insurance: a good experience

World Nomads insurance company is one of the only insurance companies that I could find to fit my needs as a world traveler. Last year, as I was preparing for my round-the-world trip, I requested a quote from my local insurance agent. They were uncomfortable offering me a standard insurance package because I was going to be gone for so long. I waited two weeks before my agent called me back with my quote. She found a company that would cover me but it was going to be expensive. [...]
